Lunge Line

« Back to Glossary Index

This is a long version of a lead line / lead rope. It is used to send the horse out on a large circle around you for training & exercise. A lunge line is a flat web material, and not a rounded long rope. While you can lunge a horse with a long rope, rope gets very heavy and can start swinging and tugging on the horse’s head. A lunge line is much lighter.

Lunge lines should not be used to tie a horse. Their length can become a tangle and tripping hazard.

Like a lead line, it is important to buy a lunge line made of web material that won’t easily give you a burn if it slides through your hands, or gets tangled around the horse’s legs. Nylon is not recommended to use as lunge lines or lead lines.

It is probably best to buy a lunge line based on the material and then using a small to medium size snap. Try to avoid large heavy snaps that can swing around and cause discomfort on the horse’s head & face.

Some lunge lines come with a (bare) chain (unlike a cavesson that has padding and a leather cover). This chain is used to control ‘high spirited’ horses, but training is a much better option, and in this course a chain is not recommended.

Like all other equipment we use on a horse, remember there is a way to use it to create clarity or to instill fear.
